Spring is many people’s favorite time of year. The exception, perhaps, is for allergy sufferers, because it is in the spring that the so-called allergy season begins due to the rapid spread of tree pollen. In 2025, spring has arrived earlier, it will be long and warm, and therefore the timing of tree flowering may increase.
What should you do to protect yourself and your child from seasonal allergies? The Russian manufacturer of goods for the whole family, YokoSun, has compiled seven rules that will help allergy sufferers this spring.
Rule 1. Do not ventilate the room
The concentration of pollen in the air is highest in spring, especially in hot and dry weather. Therefore, ventilating the premises at this time is not the best idea. It is better to freshen the air using an air conditioner with a built-in HEPA filter to purify the air; it traps even the smallest dust. But do not forget to periodically clean the filters from dust.
If you still need to ventilate the room, do it during rain or at night, but do not leave the window open for more than 5-10 minutes.
Rule 2. Humidify the air
High humidity causes pollen to settle. That is why, in order to protect yourself from seasonal allergies, it is worth purchasing an air humidifier, especially for the children's room.
The rule also applies to cleaning, which should be done more often in the spring and always using water or wet wipes. Dry cleaning, on the contrary, will raise settled pollen and dust into the air, risking entry into the body.
Rule 3. Eliminate other allergens
Seasonal allergies are accompanied by unpleasant symptoms: nasal congestion, irritation and itching of the mucous membranes, sneezing and coughing, and skin rashes. Other allergens can significantly worsen the condition. For example, dust, chemicals or food.
In spring, you should be especially careful about cleaning. Moreover, you should choose products that are guaranteed not to cause allergies in you or your baby. Pay attention to YokoSun home care products - our products do not contain aggressive surfactants that cause allergies. In the children's room, it is worth removing carpets, heavy curtains, and large soft toys for a while - they collect dust.
Reduce the amount of allergens in your food, avoid milk, peanuts, eggs and other foods that can cause allergies in you and your baby.
Rule 4. Walk prepared
After a cold winter and with the onset of warmer weather, I especially want to spend more time outside or in nature. Allergies are certainly not a reason to lock yourself at home, but while walking it is better to follow some rules.
Give preference to walks in humid weather or in the late afternoon - this is when pollen settles. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Upon returning home, take off your outer clothing, wash your face and wash your hands. It is better to immediately put the baby’s clothes in the wash, and the child himself should be rinsed with water all over to wash off the pollen from the skin.
Rule 5. Connect modern technologies
There are many apps available online that are designed specifically for allergy sufferers. With their help, you can track the flowering time of specific plants in your region and even plan your vacation using forecasts.
Some applications are designed specifically for children - so that kids can learn more about products that cause allergies and learn to read labels in a playful way. Try installing one of the ones you like on your phone and show it to your child.
Rule 6. Take antihistamines correctly
Do not prescribe drugs to yourself, and especially to your child, self-medication can sometimes have fatal consequences. Even antihistamines are prescribed individually, according to a person’s age, weight and other parameters.
If you are already prescribed medications, try to plan your intake. The fact is that you should start taking antihistamines 10-14 days before the expected flowering begins. This will help prepare the body for a difficult period and help alleviate the allergic reaction later.
Rule 7. Prepare for the next flowering season
There are three flowering periods in the year: spring, summer and autumn. Try to prepare for them in advance. For example, taking a test for antibodies to specific allergens will help identify groups of substances that cause allergies.
There are also methods that can alleviate the disease, for example, ASIT (allergen-specific immunotherapy). The method itself consists of introducing a safe amount of allergens into the human body before the flowering season. This is done to produce antibodies in it, which reduce sensitivity to allergens.
Both methods, like most medical procedures, have contraindications; consultation with a specialist is required.
Seasonal allergies are not a death sentence. Timely prevention, proper lifestyle and proper treatment will help you survive this period with minimal discomfort. If symptoms are severe, do not delay visiting your doctor.
